Qualcomm might be a name that most of you are familiar with when it comes to mobile chipsets. The company’s chipsets can be found in the majority of flagship/high-end phones, along with their 5G modems, sound cards, and more. While Qualcomm might be a bigger brand, MediaTek actually outsold them in Q4 2023.
According to the latest figures by Canalys managed to sell a total of 117 million chipsets in Q4 2023. Interestingly enough, Qualcomm only came in third place at 69 million, while Apple actually took second place with 78 million. Out of the three, MediaTek also managed to see the largest growth of 21%, whereas Qualcomm only saw a 1% growth and Apple had a 7% growth.

This is actually very impressive considering that only a few years ago, MediaTek was largely viewed as a company that made low-mid range chipsets. Canalys broke down the numbers and found that Samsung was actually MediaTek’s largest customer sitting at 22%. Qualcomm, who has a partnership with Samsung, only had 21% of Samsung’s business.
MediaTek has been making a name for themselves in recent years. The company’s Dimensity 9000 series is making waves for its performance levels. Leaked specs of the upcoming Dimensity 9400 have suggested that it could compete with the best Qualcomm has to offer.
Based on these numbers, it’s hard to imagine Qualcomm catching up with MediaTek anytime soon. It’s hardly disastrous for Qualcomm, but we have to admit that it is kind of surprising that MediaTek actually outsold them.
