Qualcomm unveils new 5G modem with AI features

There are many things that can affect our phone’s connectivity speeds. Obviously the first would be coverage. Secondly, traffic. If you’re in a densely populated area with many people connected to the network, it will slow things down. Another factor is hardware, where if your modem cannot get you the best speeds possible, you’re losing out. Thankfully, future Android phones can look forward to faster connectivity speeds thanks to a new Qualcomm 5G modem.

At MWC 2024, Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon X80 5G modem. This is the successor to the X75 from 2023. It is no doubt an improvement, but it does bring about some interesting upgrades. This includes AI features which seems to be a big thing in 2024.

The modem will pack a dedicated tensor accelerator to help with AI processing. According to Qualcomm, their new 5G modem will result in increased data speeds, lower latency, and also better coverage and location accuracy. It will also be more power efficient which is great for phones as 5G can be a battery drain.

The use of AI isn’t just for show or marketing. Qualcomm says that using AI will allow the modem to choose the best towers and bands for your phone. This should, in theory, result in the best speeds you can get no matter where you are. The on-device machine learning will also study and learn how you use your device.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 5G modem will launch in the second half of the year. This means that existing flagship phones won’t be taking advantage of it and you’ll have to wait for phones in late 2024 or 2025 to notice the differences.
