With Apple’s new mixed reality Vision Pro headset finally out on the market, fans of the Cupertino tech giant’s hardware offerings now have a means to experience spatial computing, at least as envisioned by Apple. One caveat though is that the app selection might feel a bit lacking, as platforms such as Netlix, Spotify and YouTube have stated that they will refrain from developing exclusive apps for the Vision Pro.
Speaking of the latter however, it seems that YouTube might have changed its mind on the matter. In a statement to The Verge, YouTube spokesperson Jessica Gibby mentioned that Google’s video content platform might arrive soon for the Vision Pro. She comments:
“We’re excited to see Vision Pro launch and we’re supporting it by ensuring YouTube users have a great experience in Safari. We do not have any specific plans to share at this time, but can confirm that a Vision Pro app is on our roadmap.”
Given that one of the biggest appeals of mixed reality headsets is access to content streaming, it only makes sense for YouTube – aka one of the biggest video sharing platforms online – to develop an app for the Vision Pro. Coupled with the fact that YouTube supports 360-degree content, this seems like a no-brainer.
Other factors do come into play, of course; since the Vision Pro is a first-generation product which might have a somewhat limited user base, other entities such as Netflix have refused to develop an app for the headset, instead giving subscribers the option to access their content via the device’s built-in web browser.
With all that being said though, not much was mentioned as to when Vision Pro users can download the YouTube app on their devices, although there’s currently a third-party alternative that allows for such functionality.
