Samsung could be changing displays to make cheaper foldable phones

Foldable phones don’t come cheap, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Compared to traditional displays, foldable displays are still new and therefore more expensive. There have been rumors suggesting that a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be in the works, and now we have an idea of how Samsung will achieve that.

A report from The Elec has revealed that one of the ways Samsung could reduce the overall costs is to turn to inkjet printing for its display bezels. Right now, Samsung uses a “micro dry process decoration” to create the bezels on its foldable phones. By turning to inkjet printing, it allows the company to reduce their manufacturing costs.

This is because inkjet printing puts the bezels in place already. The current method would create a film that needs to be trimmed. Also, using inkjet printing creates a film that is longer so more of it can be used. We’re not sure if there will be any differences in the user experience as a result of this change.

Samsung could also reduce the cost by changing the materials used to make the body of the phone. Samsung could also potentially turn to lower-end components instead of flagship hardware. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but it will be interesting to see how much cheaper this rumored model could cost.
