Future MediaTek chipsets could use NVIDIA’s GPU tech

0

Some of you might recall that a few years ago, Samsung and AMD struck up a partnership in which Samsung’s Exynos chipsets would feature GPUs made by AMD. It was an interesting and exciting relationship, especially since AMD’s Radeon GPUs for PCs are some of the best GPUs in the market at the moment.

Now it looks like MediaTek could be following suit, except that instead of going with AMD, MediaTek could be going with their rival, NVIDIA, who are also well-established in the PC GPU scene and make some of the most in-demand and powerful GPUs for computers out there.

This is according to a report from DigiTimes who claims that MediaTek is expected to integrate NVIDIA’s GPU technology in its mobile chipsets as early as 2024. Assuming the rumors are true, this would be quite an interesting and exciting development as it would allow MediaTek’s chipsets to further stand out from the competition.

The majority of phones out there currently rely on Qualcomm’s chipsets, which in turn also means using Qualcomm’s Adreno GPUs. While there are no issues with the Adreno GPUs, companies like AMD and NVIDIA have been in the game for an extremely long time and GPUs are their bread and butter, so suffice to say they know what they’re doing.

That being said, we are cautiously optimistic. This is because while Samsung and AMD’s partnership was exciting at the start, suffice to say that it did not exactly live up to the hype. In fact, Samsung’s more recent decision to not use its Exynos chipsets in its flagship phones like the Galaxy S23 series is kind of telling. Maybe MediaTek will have better luck with NVIDIA, but we suppose we’ll have to wait until 2024 to find out.
