DXOMARK Test Places the Pixel 7a’s Camera just Behind the Pixel 7

0

DXOMARK has finally given us its test scores on the Pixel 7a’s imaging performance, based on a number of different testing conditions and real-time usage factors. While Google phones are usually known for their exemplary camera performance, the 7a’s more affordable pricing does mean that there will be some differences in performance, especially when compared to more expensive Google handsets.

According to DXOMARK, the Pixel 7a placed 2nd in its High-End Ranking, just between the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 6. Meanwhile, the phone was a bit further away in the Global Ranking chart, falling in 27th place behind the iPhone 14 – for context, the Global list is still topped by the Huawei P60 Pro.

The phone didn’t shy away from showing its strengths during testing, including its ability to captire natural colors and white balance in photographs, with effective video stabilization as well. Further testing shows that the 7a is capable of good exposure in both photo and video sessions, with accurate depth estimation in bokeh mode. The secondary ultra-wide lens allows for a particularly wide field of view, at least in its class.

The phone does come up short in some areas, however. DXOMARK says that the 7a showed a loss of detail in video clips, with underexposed video in difficult portrait scenes, in addition to pattern noise when used indoors and in low-light situations. Other shortcomings include a limited depth of field, unstable white balance in bright light scenarios and indoor video, as well as ringing and fusion artifacts in videos and photos, respectively.

In terms of camera hardware, the Pixel 7a comes with a 64-megapixel main sensor on the rear, accompanied by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 13-megapixel front-facing camera.
