Samsung prototypes a display that can fold both ways

0

Samsung’s foldable phones at the moment pretty much only fold one way, meaning that it can be folded open flat or folded shut. That could change in the future as a report from The Verge has revealed that the company is prototyping a new display that can fold both ways, meaning inwards and outwards, creating a display that is essentially 360-degrees.

Dubbed the “Flex In & Out”, this display was actually shown off to The Verge during CES 2023. To achieve this display, Samsung had to utilize a new hinge design which actually results in a less visible crease, a point of contention with current Fold and Flip customers.

What’s interesting about this display is that it is kind of reminiscent of some of the earlier foldable phones like Huawei’s Mate X, where the company opted to place the foldable display on the outside instead of on the inside. This display could also allow Samsung to potentially do away with the need for an external display since the foldable display can now act as the front display when the phone is folded shut.

There is no mention if this new design will be used in the Fold 5, which is expected to be launched later this year, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
