MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000+ chipset is here to give Qualcomm a run for their money

Companies like Qualcomm usually announce one flagship chipset for smartphones launching in the earlier part of the year, and the company then follows up with a slightly upgraded model for devices launching in the later part of the year.

For 2022, we saw the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which was followed by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and it seems that MediaTek is not giving Qualcomm a break in the competition as they themselves have announced the Dimensity 9000+ chipset. This is an upgrade over the Dimensity 9000 chipset that was initially announced back in 2021.

The Dimensity 9000 has proven that MediaTek’s more recent chipsets are more than capable of holding their own against Qualcomm, and with the Dimensity 9000+, it will offer improvements in performance over its predecessor. The gains seem rather marginal at 5% boost in CPU and 10% boost in GPU, but it is still a welcome upgrade for phones launching in the later part of 2022.

Some of the features of the new chipset include the use of Imagiq 790 ISP which supports 18-bit HDR video recording from three cameras at the same time, 4K HDR video with AI noise reduction, and there’s also a new updated modem that can support sub-6GHz 5G networks with up to 7Gbps downlink.

The Dimensity 9000+ will also feature 5G/4G Dual SIM Dual Active support, allowing users to use two networks at once, along with Bluetooth 5.3, WiFi 6E, and the latest GNSS standard. MediaTek says that the chipset can even support WQHD+ displays up to 144Hz in refresh rate, or 180Hz for FHD+ displays. There is no mention of which Android OEMs will be adopting the chipset, but it is expected to be released in Q3 2022.
