A day after potentially revolutionizing the smartphone industry for the next year, MediaTek now has its sights set on the television market. When you look at many of the best smart home devices, including smart TVs, most of these are already powered by MediaTek processors. And today, things are a going to get a whole lot better, as MediaTek has announced its new Pentonic 2000 SoC.
This processor is the first “all-in-one” chip that will support 8K resolution at 120Hz refresh rates. There’s a dedicated MEMC engine, along with bringing the world’s first consumer-grade televisions with Versatile Video Coding H.266 support.
The new Pentonic 2000 chip is designed with all the flagship features consumers are looking for – from the latest display and audio technologies to super-fast refresh rates, powerful AI capabilities, picture-in-picture streaming and more.

All of this is made possible thanks to the 7nm process that TSMC is using to manufacture the Pentonic 2000. This marks the first commercially-available chip to use this process, with MediaTek even claiming that future products can support up to 144Hz refresh rates for gaming.
Along with supporting 8K resolution at 120Hz, the Pentonic 2000 SoC is also capable of providing both PiP or picture-by-picture, all in 8K. Paired with the CPU and onboard GPU, MediaTek is also using UFS 3.1 storage, while also supporting AV1 for streaming services and Dolby Vision/Atmos for the “ultimate cinematic experiences”.
MediaTek didn’t reveal what TV makers will be the first to release televisions using the Pentonic 2000. However, the company has confirmed that its next generation of “flagship 8K TVs” will be launching globally sometime in 2022.
