Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 Plus promises a 20% performance increase and is coming soon

0

As we’ve seen for the last few years, Qualcomm has announced a “Plus” variant of its flagship processor. During MWC 2021, Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G. This will be the successor to the Snapdragon 888 that has been at the helm for just about all of 2021’s flagship handsets so far.

In order to meet the “Plus” requirements, Qualcomm has increased the core clock speed from 2.84GHz to 2.995Ghz, while also providing a 20% increase in performance with the Qualcomm AI Engine. Outside of that, there’s really not much else that has changed for the Snapdragon 888, as the X60 5G Modem and Adreno 660 GPU are still here, with no improvements.

So when can we expect to see new flagship devices launched with this new chipset? Well, Honor was the first company to confirm it will be coming out soon with the Magic 3 powered by the Snapdragon 888 Plus. We don’t have a specific release date for that device, but ASUS confirmed it is working on a new ROG Phone powered by the 888 Plus, and even Motorola is getting in on the fun.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 888 and 888 Plus are powering “more than 130 designs”, including the likes of the Galaxy S21 series, OnePlus 9 lineup, and presumably, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 when those are shown off later this year. It will be interesting to see if there are any differences in price between the 888 Plus and the regular 888 for these phone makers. However, one could assume, that lower-priced Snapdragon 888 devices could start making their way into the market later this year.
