Samsung just issued an update for its five-year old Galaxy S6, Note 5 phones

Typically speaking, Android handset manufacturers tend to provide about 2-3 years worth of updates and security patches for their smartphones, after which they assume that most users would have probably upgraded their devices. This usually means that anything more than that is really a surprise.

That’s what some Samsung users are probably feeling at the moment because according to a report from SamMobile, it appears that Samsung has just pushed out an update for its five year old smartphones – the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 5. This comes in the form of a firmware update that bumps the phones up to G92xSKSS3ETJ1 and G928SKSS3DTJ3 respectively.

Both phones will still continue to run on Android 7.0 Nougat and this is not a major Android update. It does come as a surprise given how old these phones are, and with the changelog being rather scarce, SamMobile speculates that this could probably be some kind of security fix that patches a potentially dangerous flaw in the phones.

The update is said to be rolling out over in Korea and is also making its way to other parts of the world. It is unclear how many Galaxy S6 or Note 5 users there are out there at the moment, but if for some reason you’re still holding onto either handset, then this is an update you’ll want to check out just to be on the safe side of things.
