Big-name manufacturers typically support their flagship devices with 2 years of major firmware updates making it a given that Samsung’s current and previous flagship devices will see updates to Android Oreo. Anything older than that is usually a toss up, so it was fairly surprising to hear that the Galaxy S6 lineup and Galaxy Note 5 will be with receiving Android 8.0 Oreo on T-Mobile.
T-Mobile’s support page for the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, and Note 5 show the device manufacturer and carrier agreeing to support a new software update for the aforementioned devices with a “Phase: Complete: Version 8.0 Oreo” status.
Keep in mind the Galaxy S6 lineup is over 3 years old and while it’s extremely rare to see something so old receive a major software update, these devices will likely remain on Android 8.0 Oreo for their rest of their lives (with the exception of security updates).
There’s still no word if other carriers will follow suit. Right now it’s just Samsung and T-Mobile all by their lonesome and still no ETA on when the update will begin rolling out. We’ll need to see if this pushes other carriers to do the same.
