It’s been a little under a year since the Nexus Player first landed on the then Google Play Store. Priced at $99, it was Google’s Apple TV competitor and the perfect option for those looking for a “stock” Android TV experience controlled by Google.
Since then we’ve similar, more powerful, set top boxes released from NVIDIA (SHIELD Android TV) or more recently, the Xiaomi Mi Box which was unveiled during last week’s Google I/O. It had a good run and but it seems the Nexus Player has officially been discontinued as Google has quietly removed the listing from the Google Store.
We checked retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, Newegg, TigerDirect, and Staples — all launch partners — and it appears they’re all out of stock on units as well, letting us know the device has officially been retired. That doesn’t mean it still wont see support from Google who will push continual software updates to the device for the foreseeable future.
