If you’re an Android developer who would love to attend Google I/O but perhaps don’t have the money to spend on all that travel, Google wants to hook you up. As part of the Android Experiments I/O Challenge, Google is offering a free trip to Google I/O ($5,000 cash) including a free ticket (valued at $900) for anyone who wins the challenge. Even if you don’t, Google is giving away 5 Nexus 6Ps (64GB) for runner-ups, which makes one helluva door prize.
Android Experiments are open source projects that show off new or unique features of the Android platform. These can be apps, robots, or anything else, all you have to do is flex your creativity and think outside the box. Google says their only requirement is that the experiment must run on Android 4.4 KitKat or higher (but it’s okay if it targets a specific Android device). Google has a few tips to help your project be the best it can be:
- Show something shiny right away
- Remove visual distractions that aren’t part of your experiment
- Keep it simple, but make it worth the download
- Imagine how others can get the most out of your project – be clear in how you document your project and your code
- Don’t require the user to create or log into an account
- Ask for as few permissions as possible
- Avoid whitelisting particular Android devices, but it’s okay if your experiment works better on some devices—just let us know
- Don’t use too much battery or data without warning
You have until April 13th to submit your experiment and Google says the review process can take several weeks, so be patient. For more details, hit up the challenge page linked below.
