Kik’s latest update makes it one of the few messaging apps that lets you upload video from your gallery

Kik update video upload

There’s no shortage of messaging applications out on the Google Play Store, but Kik is sets itself apart thanks to wide adoption, and its super easy sign up. Simply choose a username, password, and you’re all set. You wont need to provide anyone with your full name or email address in order to chat with friends, adding a sort of anonymity to the service.

While there’s plenty of messaging applications that allow you to take and send video (don’t worry, it should be coming to Hangouts eventually), Kik’s latest update ups the ante by giving users the ability to upload videos straight off their gallery/camera roll. It’s absolutely perfect for sharing videos you’ve already taken. For the vast majority of folks, these should be most of videos you’d want to share with friends while chatting.

Just like with their photos, expect Kik to compresses the videos down to Snapchat-like video quality. Given their user base, we don’t think many people will have issue. Bandwidth isn’t cheap and Kik is free after all. You can grab the update right now on the Google Play Store if you’d like to give it a shot. Now, if only they could add GIF uploads I’d have even more reason to use it.

  1. Um..Whats app has let you do this forever, as well as voice notes well before this. Also pop up notifications.

    1. And WhatsApp is one of the “few” apps that allows this. =.P

But isn’t WhatsApp an SMS application? Well… Chris did say “messaging” applications.

You can keep your pop up notifications. I cannot get used to that. I’ve tried. I need my reply-from-notification-bar. I refuse to use any app to replace my default SMS application if I can’t reply from the notification bar. I LOVE that.

      1. WhatsApp is not an SMS app, uses data to send messages.

  2. Telegram, BBM, Viber they all have this feature for a long time.

EDIT: Chris is right, BBM doesn’t allow it.

    1. Viber, yes. BBM not so much.

      1. I checked. You are right Chris. My bad.

  3. How is KIK relevant anymore? with skype, facetime, and hangouts…This was the first appi downloaded on my first android with a front facing camera to video call, it sucked even over wifi but it was only video call app on android at the time. Since then I havent used it.

  4. I just want GIF support in WhatsApp! Someone grab those developers by the shoulders and shake them

  5. There are now several messaging apps that are starting to emerge and they offer features that are unique and something interesting. This can be a strong competitor of Viber, WhatsApp and Line. http://www.crittermap.com/app/gold-alloy-analog-watch-face/
