Back in August we saw the biggest update to the Google News & Weather app since it was introduced year’s ago in Froyo. The update brought about a refreshed look with Google’s familiar white card-based layout. Today, an update to Google News & Weather is allowing users to now choose a “dark theme” for the app, something users have been clamoring for in some of Google’s other apps and services.
Those with a keen eye will also notice a few added Material design animations when expanding cards, curated stories, and new weather graphs. Still, we can’t help but wonder if more apps will follow suit. Currently, a “dark” theme is only available the new Google Keyboard and Google News & Weather at the moment, but we’re crossing our fingers this is a sign of things to come.
Default’ish profile image?
man, I hope they add dark themes to all of their apps I about go blind trying to read my tablet at night.
Hey Phandroid, how about y’all lead the way and give us a dark theme too?
You hear that, @stevealbright:disqus????
But doesn’t the phandroid app already have a dark theme because that is what I’m currently using.
I like the white.
A: It’s none of your business what they do with their time. B: Why do you even care if we’re given the option of a dark theme? It’s not like you’d be forced to use it.
Options are good.
Thank god, finally. Now how about a night mode for chrome?
Still not seeing the option, got the latest update.
EDIT:
D/L an apk from Apkmirror, it has the dark theme.
I hope this becomes the norm, I hate using bright apps at night. It’s why I use Spotify while driving instead of Google Play.
I use the night or dark theme on all my devices. Apps, keyboards, texts, icon packs, etc.
The only big things with color us my app drawer, wallpaper and weather widget
Black themes matter too
Most of all….on LED screens… Darker Colors= Better battery life….at least that’s the case with my SAMOLED screen..I use Dark themes whenever possible.. That’s why I Use Textra for messaging….but now imma give this a try….
Yes, on all OLED screens. On LCDs, even those backlighted by LCDs like phones, there’s a tiny difference in favor of white on battery life.
I’ve never heard of this app and it’s been out since Froyo. Sad. I just downloaded it to give it a try.
Please Google, bring dark themes to all your internal apps.
