Earlier this week we got a sneak peak at what could be the front panels from the upcoming Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. Other than it’s large bezels, the images didn’t reveal much. And while it seems crazy for some to think that Sony could already be looking to release a Sony Xperia Z2 followup, there was really nothing indicating the phone would launch anytime soon.
Be that as it may, we were definitely intrigued at the idea of a Sony Xperia Z2 with updated hardware, (even if the Z2’s specs are more than adequate at present). Yesterday, XDA developer DooMLoRD tweeted out a screen shot allegedly taken from the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, along with some of the device’s specs. Let’s just say there may be a market for what Sony’s cooking up. Here’s what we could be looking at:
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (D580x)
- 4.5-inch display,
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor / Adreno 330 GPU
- 2GB RAM
- 20.7MP rear / 2.1MP front facing cameras
Although the screenshot shows Android 4.4.2, we have no reason to believe the phone could at least ship, or immediately be updated to Android 4.4.4 which recently began rolling out to a number of Xperia Z devices. Although consumers normally have to compromise in areas like performance when looking for a smaller Android device, this Z3 doesn’t seem to sacrifice much.
Still up in the air is the battery size or display resolution, but if everything checks out, it’s looking like this could be my next phone (providing it ever comes to the US). With the current trend of Android smartphones growing larger and larger every year, personally, I had given up hope that an OEM would ever release a smaller device with flagship specs. C’mon, Sony. Do it for me.
meh
Love that Sony keeps offering high end smaller phones. Personally got tired with the trend of carrying a mini tablet in my pocket all day. Have an unlocked Z1 Compact myself and love it. Here’s to hoping this one comes to the U.S. so I can stop buying unlocked phones from Europe.
It’s great for consumers to actually have options, I think while there is a bigger market for larger handsets, there’s still a fairly large group of consumers who like small and powerful handsets, it’s great that Sony is stepping up to the plate for consumers who want something a bit smaller, while still being a flagship. Android is all about choice, choosing the device that fits your needs.
Bigger phones only own the market share because customers didn’t have a choice. If you wanted a flagship phone you had to get the giant one. Manufacturers did this to keep cost down.
Can we get a Z2 compact first?
OOnly thing missing for me to love this one as the perfect phone, would be a GPE version of it (that still took good pictures, i don’t care about all the extras :P()
No look PASS!

Ehn, I guess guys with small hands need phones too :::shrugs::b
Who even wrote this article?
Chris…
Try looking under the headline. Are you that lazy, or just a short bus rider?
Or maybe he’s accessing the mobile version of the site. I know that must sound strange to you, given the fact that said website caters to the mobile industry.
Look above
No names shows up under mobile.
And yes I am a short bus rider.

Really nice phone… to give to my 8yo.
much too small. pass.
Paging Michael Scott….
too small? do you ever go out of the house? do you ever put your phone in your pocket? do you ever go to the gym? do you jog? lots of reasons to own a smaller powerful device. maybe you are 6 feet 8 inch freak will gorilla hands?
Being 6’6″ I can tell you 6’8″ isn’t that tall. More importantly. Companies should be offering multiple screen sizes with the same specs (except battery) so that the consumer doesn’t have to make compromises. Everyone has different preferences and needs for smart phones. For me, around 5″ is perfect.
Yes, I agree. Choices are great for Android, but some people think that every new phone should be bigger than the last. By that logic they are becoming less of a “mobile phone”
I’m 6’6″ and I find anything smaller than a Note 3 to be toy-like in its size.
Ya you guys are on the tall side… I’m 5’4″
I’m 6’4″ and feel the same way. Can easily weild the Note 3 one handed.
How about an all-in-one to fit in your hand???
Maybe this person prefers phones that are larger. Just like you’re arguing your case about someone wanting smaller phones.
They can’t have their opinion? Yes, there will be those that say this is just right, and there will be those that say this is too small.
They’re not saying anything like, “the phone is too small for anyone”, “why would they make this”, blah blah blah.
It’s easier for the hands to deal with a bigger phone than it is for the eyes to deal with smaller screen
That’s brilliant news for people who want single handed operation of a well spec’d device. If I wasn’t so swayed by the benfits of the Nexus range then this phone would be top of my list.
Wow jaguar cubs i want tiger cubs
Sony needs to start making phones again, there are enough phablets on the market.
Z3 compact leak and the Z2 compact is still no where! Maybe this is the Z2 compact? Either way it looks good but its not enough of an upgrade over the Z1 compact to entice me.
