Samsung hasn’t been shy about wanting to be in every space they can, and the South Korean company seems to be ready to tackle yet another market segment. As we’ve heard before, Samsung wants to challenge the smart glasses market that is just now getting off its feet. Google has been the most ambitious player in this arena so far, with Google Glass still in its infancy and awaiting a retail release in 2014.
That said, suspicion that Samsung is working on a solution of their own seems to have been confirmed with the latest patent filing by the company. The patent shows a pair of glasses with a front-mounted camera, buttons on the side, and wired cables that are designed to reach behind your neck, potentially to be plugged into a smartphone. It also sports built-in earbuds for audio.
This design seems quite rudimentary, though it’s possible this is just a prototype. Whatever Samsung is cooking up has the potential to look much different when or if they ever reveal it to the public. It’s also worth nothing Samsung is referring to it as a pair of “sports glasses,” with one of its primary functions being to show relevant information to athletes on a heads-up display.
With that, we’re not sure if Samsung is looking to target a specific market or bring a device for a broad range of consumers, but we hope whatever they do pushes the entirety of this new product category forward (unlike the Galaxy Gear managed to do in its first iteration).

Nobody likes wires, but if that means these glasses don’t need their own battery or processor, these could be really cheap and light.
And only ever be compatible with new Samsung products.
Please. Devs will hack the mess out any Samsung-only product. Samsung over there tryna be all proprietary and stuff.
Samsung is saturating. They copy local apps from Google but do a poor job at making them have a quality experience. They just make things now to say we have it too. Never improved S-Voice. It’s as good as nothing. Just stick with Google Now since you’re an Android phone. If you’re not gonna make it worth it, then stop.
Yeah Athletes need more distractions while performing task in a sport.
This junk has gone crazy, HUD for this, HUD for that, why would a athlete even play sports when they could just do a virtual game with glasses?
Only compatible with new Samsung phones, no, your GS3 is too old, you fool. Can only be charged by Samsung approved charger, if not, they will self destruct. Google who? These will use only Samsung apps downloaded from the Samsung app store. How do you pay for them? Easy. You can charge them to your Samsung credit card. It’s beginning to look a lot like Apple. And by ‘it’s’ I mean Samsung.
You’re kinda right about this. That’s what I’m scared of. I hope they don’t let this fame get to their heads and forget about us consumers.
Competition is good… oh I’m sorry… no when it is against Google.
Hopefully this is just a prototype.
Samsung should partner with Google and do a glass project. With Google running things and Samsung’s media attention they could be unstoppable
And they’ll be butt-ugly, in typical Samsung style.
WTF!? Those actually look cool. I like that design.
“Samsung hasn’t been shy about wanting to be in every FACE they can…”
FTFY :p
Yep… and Samsung will pretty much do anything and everything to keep competitors at bay… even…. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2057720/taiwan-fines-samsung-for-defaming-htc-with-fabricated-reviews.html
=.=
I like that. Samsung is getting too big. That makes Google and specially Apple move their butts more enthusiastically. Google puts adds in everything, Samsung copies everything and Apple brain washes everyone. Oh boy this competition is better than the world cup. Who’s the winner? We are? Perhaps.
I dont know if I can handle Touchwiz 24/7 in front of my face.
“Sports glasses”? with an external connection? these have special operations written all over them.
If it has headphones it reminds me of Oakley Thump, but I think even those worked through Bluetooth and not wires. Recall if this is going to suck juice from our phones, our battery life is going to suck just look at the Gear as an example.
Google still winning.
