Galaxy Z Fold 7 gets Qi2 support—but with a catch

According to a report from 9to5Google, a listing on the Wireless Power Consortium just confirmed the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Qi2 support. But don’t get too excited yet.

Based on the listing, the phone will ship with Qi 2.1.0 support. If you’re a wireless charging nerd, you probably know this is a big deal for foldables, but there’s a catch. The listing itself is short on details, only calling this a mobile phone that’s “coming soon.”

Still, the SM-D637U model number matches up with the way the WPC listed past Galaxy foldables, like the Z Fold 5 (SM-D617D) and the Fold SE (SM-D269N).

So what’s the catch with Galaxy Z Fold 7 Qi2 support? If you’re hoping for “real” Qi2—meaning built-in magnets for perfect MagSafe-like alignment and accessories—don’t hold your breath. Samsung’s latest flagships have mostly been “Qi2 Ready.” That means the device is certified to work with cases that add magnetic rings for accessories, but not with magnets in the phone itself. That’s what’s happening here.

Even so, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Qi2 certification makes it one of the first foldables to get any kind of Qi2 support at all. For people tired of “quirky” wireless charging on foldables.
