Google’s document scanner now auto-enhances scans by default

Scanning documents with your phone just got a little smoother. According to Android Authority, Google has quietly rolled out an update to its document scanner that enhances images automatically—no extra steps are required.

This new behavior is part of an update to the MLKit document scanner used across several Google apps, including Drive, Files by Google, and the Pixel Camera app. Previously, you had to dig into a filter menu to apply the enhancement manually. Now, the scanner applies it right away, immediately after the scan finishes.

You’ll also notice a new button in the top-right corner after a scan is complete. Tap it to remove the enhancement and revert to the original image. It’s a small but helpful tweak, especially if you scan receipts, notes, or contracts regularly.

The feature appears to be part of version 25.17.30 of Google Play Services. Since Google tends to roll these updates out server-side, there’s a good chance many users already have it without realizing. This change doesn’t just save time—it also improves usability, especially for users who may not have known the enhancement option was buried in the filters menu to begin with.

While it’s not a headline-grabbing feature, it’s another quiet example of Google issuing quality-of-life updates to apps and features we rely on daily.
