For a brief moment in time, it felt like Huawei was going to be the biggest smartphone player in town. However, tensions between the US and China led to Huawei’s efforts being hobbled. But now it looks like Huawei chipset efforts might have found a new home in a burgeoning industry, AI. According to a recent report, it claims that Huawei chipsets are being used to power DeepSeek.
In a post on X by Alexander Doria, it has been suggested that Huawei chipsets are used to power DeepSeek AI. For those unfamiliar, DeepSeek is a new AI startup from China. The company burst onto the scene very recently and has been gaining a lot of attention for seemingly being able to outperform the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
What makes the company’s efforts even more amazing is its costs. Companies spend billions training and developing AI models. However, DeepSeek reportedly only spent a few million while using older and less powerful hardware. The company’s AI models are trained on the NVIDIA H800, but apparently it is running inference using Huawei’s 910C chipset.
Assuming this is accurate, there’s a chance that even though Huawei might not be such a prominent player in the smartphone space, they might have found another industry to thrive in. With all the focus and emphasis being placed on AI these days, it might end up working to Huawei’s advantage.
