Here’s Why the EU Wants USB-C as the New Charging Standard

0

Not too long ago, we got word that Apple is now gradually discontinuing sales of the iPhone SE 3 and 14 in the EU, in order to comply with the Union’s mandate on USB-C charging technologies. The two models are the last couple of iPhones in Apple’s lineup to feature Lightning ports, with the 15 series and newer using more modern Type C ports.

With that in mind, the EU recently published an official release on the implementation of what it refers to as the “the common charging solution.” This requirement will be applicable to all mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, handheld videogame consoles, e-readers, earbuds, keyboards, mice, as well as portable navigation systems as of December 28, 2024, and for laptops by April 28, 2026.

According to the EU, this standardization will benefit consumers by allowing them to charge any compatible device with a single USB-C charger, as well as the harmonization of fast-charging technology to prevent artificial limitations on charging speeds and ensure consistent performance across devices.

The EU adds that unbundling chargers from device sales will help reduce e-waste, and improved consumer information regarding charging characteristics will empower users to make informed decisions about compatible chargers, further reducing waste and unnecessary purchases, and is estimated to save consumers at least €250 million annually.

The EU has been cracking down on big tech in the past few years, going all-in with its mandates regarding the use of certain technologies and practices which in its view come out as anti-consumer.
