Update – It seems that the 9th of June, 2025 date might not be entirely accurate. According to Google, the deletion deadlines will be different for different users. It will be approximately 6 months from the time that they are notified.
One of the features of Google Maps is Timeline. It was originally known as Location History, and if it is a feature you’ve always enjoyed using, prepare to bid it farewell. According to emails that Google has been sending out to users, the Timeline feature in Google Maps is shutting down in 2025.
Based on the emails, Google has set an official date for the shut down. This will happen on the 9th of June, 2025. This means that you’ve got a little over half a year to continue enjoying the feature before it is gone. Before you get too sad, note that the feature isn’t going away completely.
At the moment, Timeline exists as a cloud-based service. As long as you’re logged into your Google account, you can view it anywhere. Google did express their intention to move it to an on-device feature making it more private. The company also previously set the shut down date for the 1st of December this year, but that has clearly changed.
While the cloud-based version of Google Maps Timeline is going away, the feature is expected to remain. However, it is being changed to a device-specific tracking feature. This makes your data more private, which honestly should have been the case from the start. Google will also automatically delete data older than 3 months unless users step in to save it.
