The idea of gaming smartphones has been a bit contentious. After all, what really constitutes a gaming handset that a regular flagship can’t meet? For those who can appreciate the subtleties, you might be interested to learn that ASUS has announced its latest gaming handset in the ROG Phone 9 and the ROG Phone 9 Pro.

In terms of specs, both the base model and the Pro model are more or less identical. We’re talking about the use of a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 185Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, both handsets are powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Both the ASUS ROG Phone 9 and Pro models also pack the same 5,800mAh battery with 65W charging.

As for their differences, the Pro model comes with a higher amount of RAM starting at 16GB, while the base model comes with 12GB. However, there is the option to choose the 512GB storage option which then bumps the base model’s RAM to 16GB. The Pro model, on the other hand, can go up to 24GB of RAM if you opt for the 1TB model.

The cameras are also slightly different. The base model has a triple camera setup that consists of a 50MP main, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 5MP macro. The Pro model has a 50MP main, a 32MP telephoto, and a 13MP ultrawide. Both handsets will feature a 32MP selfie cam.

According to ASUS, both models are expected to be available in Q1 2025. The base model is priced starting at $999.99, while the Pro model will start at $1,199.99.
