Some audiophiles might argue that music streaming doesn’t necessarily offer the best quality in terms of audio compared to other formats. But if you enjoy the convenience of music streaming but still want higher quality audio, it seems that you can rest assured that Spotify is still working on its lossless audio tier.
This is according to a recent earnings call by the company where according to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, he teased that it is something that is still being worked on. This was in response to a question from an investor regarding a potential “Super Premium” product offering. According to Ek, “Some of those things are proximity to artists. Some of those things are, of course, better sound quality and a bunch of other things. I can’t get into specifics but I think I’ve left enough breadcrumbs for you guys to get excited by.”
This isn’t the first time Spotify has revealed that they are working on a higher quality tier, such as lossless audio. Back in 2021, the company actually announced plans to offer such a tier to subscribers, but those plans have been delayed over the years. This has put Spotify in an awkward position as their competitors, such as Apple Music and Amazon Music, are already offering higher-quality audio to their subscribers.
To make things even worse, these features are offered as part of a standard subscription, whereas Spotify seems to have plans to maybe charge consumers for it. Either way, Ek’s statement doesn’t really tell us when the company plans to launch it, but at the very least we know those plans aren’t dead yet.
