Apple’s entry into the smart home market has been kind of small and not particularly impactful. So far, the company’s smart home devices essentially consist of the HomePod and the HomePod Mini. That could change in 2025 as Apple could launch their next smart home product that is similar to the Google Nest Hub.
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s next foray into the smart home market could launch in 2025 in the form of a smart display. This would essentially be similar to other smart displays like the Nest Hub, Echo Show, and so on. The main difference is that it is expected to be powered by AI.
It will be smart in the sense that it will rely on sensors to show contextual information on the screen. For instance, the screen could show the temperature if no one is nearby. But if someone walks close and the sensors detect a human presence nearby, it could switch to thermostat controls.
Gurman’s report suggests that it will be a relatively small device that could look quite similar to an iPad. It is rumored to measure approximately 6-inches and will be square-ish in its design. It will host a camera, built-in speakers, and a rechargeable battery to top things off. We suppose the main draw here would be its AI features which could potentially help it stand out amongst the competition.
Apparently this device has been in the works for the past three years. It’s also something that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has been pushing as a priority. So far we can’t say we’re too excited or impressed based on the rumors, but perhaps there could be more to it than has been let on. Either way, hopefully we’ll have more details in 2025, so until then take it with a grain of salt.
