When you watch videos on streaming platforms like Disney+ or Netflix, sometimes some shows will show you a little recap of what’s happened. This is great for catching up or if you’ve forgotten what you’ve watched so far. But Amazon is taking things further with Prime Video by introducing recaps that are powered by generative AI.
What’s the difference between these AI recaps and normal recaps? Normal recaps are fixed. Someone actually spliced and edited various clips together, so it doesn’t matter if you’ve seen that season or episode before, the recap will remain the same. With Prime Video AI recaps, Amazon is relying on generative AI to create more contextual recaps for your videos.
Amazon is calling this new feature X-Ray Recaps and basically what it does is that it doesn’t matter how far into a show you are, you can get a recap of what happened so far. For example, if you step away for a few minutes to attend to a call or your baby, X-Ray Recaps will help catch you up.
The company claims that this is achieved by analyzing video segments, subtitles, and spoken dialogue. It even goes as far as ensuring that even if you get recaps, it won’t reveal too much to prevent spoilers. We haven’t tried it ourselves so we can’t speak to how effective it is. However, if you are a Prime Video subscriber in the US, the new AI recaps feature should already be live for you.
