Qualcomm is expected to announce their new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipsets soon. This will be the company’s latest and most powerful chipset to date, but it could also be their most expensive if the reports are to be believed.
According to the rumors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to cost about $240 per chipset. For context, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is reported to have cost $200 per chipset, and just for extra information, Apple’s new A18 Pro apparently only costs $45.
This means that come 2025, flagship phones that choose to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could end up being more expensive than 2024’s models. We imagine that most companies probably don’t want to end up absorbing the costs and might just pass it down to customers. Alternatively, some companies might eat the costs in order to keep their sales figures, or seek out cheaper components for the other parts of the phone to balance it out.
That being said, the rising cost of Qualcomm’s flagship chipsets could force companies to seek alternatives. MediaTek recently announced their brand new Dimensity 9400 chipset built using TSMC’s second-gen 3nm node. It is priced at $155, which if true makes it about $100 cheaper than Qualcomm.
