Perhaps at this point in time it’s safe to say that the days of Android’s troubles with regular security updates are long-gone. With big names such as Samsung and Google providing timely and consistent software support on their devices, folks can keep devices for longer without fear of their phone becoming too outdated.
Take for example the new Samsung Galaxy A16, which was recently spotted on Samsung’s France webpage. Equipped with specs including a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, Exynos 1330 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and a triple-camera setup with a 50MP main sensor, the phone’s biggest highlight is its length of software support.
For just around 250 EUR, Samsung promises buyers up to six years of software updates. For context, more expensive smartphones like the Google Pixel 9 series come with up to seven years of support, and more than half a decade’s worth of software support isn’t too bad, especially for people who like to keep their phones for a long time.
Of course, there are considerations to be made – smartphones often have trouble when older hardware meets big software updates, and the 4GB of RAM onboard is a somewhat underwhelming choice especially in 2024. That’s not to mention the battery health degradation that might occur during the half-decade period of use.
Still, if all you’re after is a cheap phone with many years of updates then the Galaxy A16 might be right up your alley.
