It’s no secret that Samsung has remained as one of the last few Android OEMs to launch compact-sized Android flagship phones in the past few years, and along with Google’s Pixel line and Apple’s iPhones, there are a very small number of high-powered non-phablet handsets on the market right now.
That might all change soon however, at least according to new rumors online – known tech leaker “Ice Universe” claims that the South Korean tech veteran will ditch small flagships entirely once the Galaxy S26 arrives in the next couple of years, leaving only a “plus” and “ultra” model, both of which will come with larger screens.
He specifies that this is due to Samsung’s base model flagships no longer being competitive, with upcoming phones such as the much-anticipated Oppo Find X8 expected to offer much better overall performance while keeping things small. The post doesn’t name any sources, and goes on to say that the Galaxy S25 (scheduled to launch next year) is no longer competitive. Part of his post reads:
When OPPO Find X8 is released, you will find that one of the characteristics of the new flagship in 2024 is that it is small and powerful. Chinese brands are much better at making small-sized mobile phones than Samsung and Apple.
You will realize that Galaxy S25 is no longer worth releasing. The gap between them is too big… It is said that Samsung may adjust the S26 series and may cancel the S26 because it is no longer competitive.
Of course at the moment do take this with a grain of salt, although if true then this might further lessen the number of compact flagship phones available, at least in markets like North America.
