The brand new Apple iPhone 16 Pro series is powered by the new A18 Pro chipset. This is supposed to be Apple’s latest and greatest chipset to date, but it looks like MediaTek might have outdone it. According to a recent Geekbench listing, the Dimensity 9400 has outperformed the A18 Pro in the multi-core test.
According to the benchmarks, the Dimensity 9400 scored 8833 points in multi-core performance. For context, the A18 Pro scored 8492 points. However, this is only for multi-core. In terms of single-core performance, the A18 Pro outdoes MediaTek’s chipset with a score of 3409 versus 2889.
That being said, it’s not exactly an apples to apples comparison. First of all, Apple’s iPhones use their own proprietary iOS platform. This allows Apple to get away with using things like less RAM because the OS would be optimized for it. A more interesting comparison would be to see how the MediaTek chipset fares against the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
In any case, it is still a good sign to see how far MediaTek’s technology has come over the years. The company used to be viewed as a cheaper but less powerful alternative to Qualcomm. But based on the company’s releases over the past few years, they’re proving to be a worthwhile competitor.
