In case you thought modern smartphones couldn’t get any bigger, well you might be wrong – in what was a rather successful attempt to land an entry in the Guinness World Record, YouTubers Arun Maini from MrWhoseTheBoss and Matthew Perkins of DIY Perks built a giant iPhone which comes with all the same functionality you’d expect from the real and smaller model.
Measuring 6.74 feet tall, the “phone” uses an 88-inch LG TV which was modified to support touch input. Meanwhile, the cameras on the back of the phone were installed using full-blown Canon and Sony cameras. Also present was an aluminum frame around the entirety of the phone, which was fixed to a metal stand to allow screen rotation functionality. Other features were likewise present, including contactless payments, video calls, and the ability to install apps.
Perhaps one misleading bit about this entire endeavour is that the phone doesn’t exactly run on iOS, as implied in the video’s title and thumbnail. At the core of the giant phone is Google’s Android which runs via Bliss OS, allowing it to be modified to look like iOS. This means that pretty much all of the underlying software functionality is still powered by a combination of Windows and Android, and not iOS as initially shown in the video.
Nevertheless, it is impressive to see smartphone hardware be engineered into a larger, and still-functioning form factor.
