Since its inception, one of Android’s biggest strengths was its flexibility when it came to customization and UI changes. This allowed for various manufacturers and brands to tweak how the platform looks, and as a result we’ve gotten different approaches to how users can interact with the OS.
Take for example the notification and quick settings menu, which has seen different redesigns depending on the brand and manufacturer. Google’s usual approach with its Material You theme opts for a more minimal look, compared to the more cluttered and almost Apple-esque designs on phones from Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo to name a few.
With that said though, it looks like Google is working on adding some significant visual changes to how Android (particularly on the Pixel phones) will handle the quick settings menu layout, as reported by the folks over at Android Authority.
It seems that moving forward, users will no longer be able to pull down on the status bar twice to view notifications and settings tiles, respectively – instead, pulling on the status bar with two fingers will be the only way to access the quick settings menu. Users can then swipe left or right to view the different settings tiles.
With that being said though, this is still in development and it’s speculated that we won’t see this until the arrival of Android 16 next year. If implemented, it might also prove to be a divisive matter between users, especially those who prefer the tried-and-tested method that we currently have.
