TCL’s new e-ink smartphones are pretty damn cool

0

A lot of smartphones these days place a lot of emphasis on its display. It makes sense. After all, it’s what we look at the most when we’re on our phones, so having a big, bright, and beautiful display is the logical way to go. However, TCL is going in another direction with its new Nxtpaper smartphones that feature an e-ink like display.

At IFA 2024, TCL has announced two new phones that are part of its Nxtpaper series. This includes the TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G and 50 Nxtpaper 5G. They are regular phones, for the most part, but they come with a button that enables what TCL is calling “Max Ink Mode”.

This basically turns the entire display monochrome and mimics the effects of e-ink that you might find on devices like e-readers. This isn’t just for visual effects, though. It will silence notifications and make your phone more reader-friendly. It also extends your battery life, which TCL claims will allow you to get up to seven days worth of reading out of it.

This is actually really cool, especially if you want an e-reader but don’t want to buy and carry around another device.

The phones themselves come with a 6.8-inch 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Take note that the smartphones display isn’t actual e-ink, but rather it can mimic the effects of e-ink.

They also include a 5,010mAh battery. The main difference between the models is that the Pro model comes with a 32MP selfie cam and 512GB of storage, while the non-Pro model packs 256GB of storage and an 8MP selfie cam. In terms of pricing, the TCL 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5G and 50 Nxtpaper 5G are priced at €299 and €229 respectively.
