Forget foldable displays, Samsung has a new stretchy display that’s even cooler!

We know that foldable phones and displays are all the rage these days. There has also been some interest expressed towards rollable displays. But now it looks like Samsung could have something completely new in the form of a stretchy display. This was shown off on video at the recent IMID 2024 conference.

If you’re seeing this for the first time, it’s actually not new. Samsung debuted something similar way back in 2017, but the latest prototype shows that the company has come a long way in developing its stretchy display. This display is made using micro LED and according to Samsung, can be stretched up to 1.25 times and even twisted like rubber.

During the demo, Samsung even molded the display into the shape of Jeju Island, the location where IMID 2024 is taking place. Before you get too excited, we’re not sure what plans Samsung has for its stretchy display just yet. While we think it’s pretty awesome in terms of actual technology, the practical applications still elude us.

We doubt that this will see a use in smartphones. After all, there’s really no need for a smartphone display to be stretchy. It is possible that due to its stretchy and bendy nature it could be better suited for devices that aren’t flat. Maybe it could be used to wrap around pillars or cones where its stretchy nature could allow it to fit around objects of varying sizes. Either way, check out the video above if you want to see it in action.
