Ever since Samsung burst onto the scene with their foldables, many have been wondering if Apple will follow suit. There have been rumors that Apple is working on a foldable device, where past rumors suggested it could arrive in 2023. That obviously never happened. Now it looks like those dates have been pushed yet again.
According to well-connected Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, he posted on X that Apple’s first-ever foldable might have been delayed again. The initial plan was to release the device in the first half of 2026, but now it seems that it has been delayed to the end of 2027 or possibly even 2028. At this point, we’ve more or less given up on seeing it. We also wouldn’t be surprised if it could end up being delayed again or scrapped entirely.
Kuo claims that the delay is due to technical challenges with the display and some mechanical components. The display has also been reduced from a rumored 20.25-inch screen to an 18.8-inch display.
For those who are a bit lost, Apple’s rumored first-ever foldable wasn’t going to be a phone. It is rumored that it could be some kind of iPad/MacBook hybrid. Based on the rumored display sizes, that seems to be the case. It is kind of smart that Apple isn’t approaching it from a smartphone perspective.
There are simply way too many foldables in the market right now. Going with a foldable tablet/laptop hybrid could actually be a better way to get their foot in the door. In any case, take it with a grain of salt for now and maybe don’t hold your breath.
