Google recently announced that it’s expanding its “School time” feature that allows parents to stay in touch with kids, without necessarily distracting them from their classes. The feature’s been available on the Fitbit Ace for a while now, and will make its way to even more Android devices in the coming months.
School time allows parents to set their child’s personal device to a dedicated home screen with a set limit of functions during school hours, which helps reduce distractions during class. Parents can also set up which apps are only allowed during School time via Family Link, and they’ll also have the option to allow calls or texts from specific contacts. School time can also be turned on outside of class when it may be time to focus or take a break from screens.
For older kids and teens, Google is providing additional control settings for other situations. These include new YouTube features that will let parents link their accounts to monitor teen activity, while Family Link expands supervision to all ages, allowing parents to manage apps, screen time, and location sharing.
Additionally, Google has default safety settings for all users under 18, including SafeSearch, content restrictions, and limited recommendations of potentially harmful content, especially for teens.
