Olympic Medalists can finally take selfies from the podium, but only with a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6

It seems Samsung launched their Galaxy Z Flip 6 smartphone at the right time. Why is that, you ask? It turns out that the launch of the phone coincided with the Paris 2024 Olympics games, where the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is featured very prominently amongst the competing athletes.

This is because Samsung is handing out Galaxy Z Flip 6 smartphones to athletes on the podium, getting them to take what they are calling “Victory Selfies”. The photos taken are then shared wirelessly to the Athlete365 portal. This portal is where the photos can be viewed by others. According to Team Samsung Galaxy member Rayssa Leal, who represents Brazil in the skateboarding event:

“To be able to share to share the moment of achieving my dream of winning a medal with my fans, family and friends around the world — through my own perspective — was incredible. It not only amplified a moment I’ll never forget but also celebrated the camaraderie beyond the competition as my fellow medalists and I took the Victory Selfie together on the podium.”

What’s interesting is that according to the official rules, athletes are actually not allowed to record videos of themselves while on the podium. However, we suppose this is a little different as it is a photo, not a video. Also, given how Samsung has been an Olympic partner since 1998, we suppose it’s not surprising.

It is a very good and clever marketing push. With millions, if not billions of eyes on the games, we’re sure that there are many at home who might be curious about the phone that these athletes are using during their podium appearances. Especially since these selfies are taken using the cover display.
