Smartphones these days have peaked in terms of hardware. This means that handset makers need to think of new features to entice customers. In recent years, we’ve started to see more companies introduce SOS satellite support, and this is something that could come to the Pixel 9 series.
According to a collaboration report between Android Authority and Assemble Debug, it seems that Google will give Pixel 9 customers free access to SOS satellite connectivity. However, this is only good for two years, after which you will presumably have to pay a fee. How much this fee will be is unclear, but customers won’t have to worry about it for two years.
We previously heard rumors that the Pixel 9 could support satellite connectivity, and this report corroborates that. The free two-year offer is in line with Apple, who also offers two years of free connectivity for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 customers.
For those unfamiliar, SOS satellite connectivity is meant to give customers communications access in an emergency. For example, if you’re trapped somewhere without a cellular signal, SOS satellite connectivity will let you reach out to others. It’s not really meant to be used for entertainment or general internet use.
Given that this will require specialized hardware, we doubt that older Pixel models will be getting this feature.
