Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 versus the Vivo X Flip

0

Samsung makes some of the best Android phones in the market today. There is a reason why they are as big as they are. However, this doesn’t mean that the competition isn’t catching up. Samsung announced its latest Galaxy Z Flip 6 smartphone just last week, but how does it hold up versus other handsets like the Vivo X Flip? Let’s find out!

Design

In terms of design, both the Flip 6 and Vivo X Flip are very different from each other. Samsung has updated the design of the Flip 6 over its predecessor, giving it flatter edges, but otherwise it still looks the same. As for the Vivo X Flip, the company has opted for softer and rounder edges, as well as employing the use of a textured material to give the phone some kind of faux leather/embossed effect.

As for its size, the Flip 6 measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm unfolded, versus the Vivo X Flip which measures 166.4 x 75.3 x 7.8 mm. Based on these specs, the Vivo X Flip is slightly wider. When folded shut, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip is 14.9mm thin, while the Vivo X Flip is slightly thicker at 16.6mm.

The Flip 6 also weighs 187 grams, while Vivo’s foldable is heavier at 198 grams.

Display

For the display, both phones are near identical when it comes to the inner foldable display. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a 6.7-inch screen when fully unfolded, while the Vivo X Flip has a 6.74-inch screen. Both displays have a 120Hz refresh rate and use an LTPO AMOLED panel.

The outer display is where things are a little different. Samsung’s Flip 6 has a 3.4-inch external screen versus the Vivo X Flip’s 3-inch screen. One thing to note is that Samsung has wrapped its external display around its cameras, so it isn’t edge to edge. Vivo has opted to separate the external screen from the camera entirely, so it’s more like a bar running across the outer shell of the phone.

Performance

For the internals of the phone, it is obvious that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is more powerful versus the Vivo X Flip. Vivo’s phone was launched in 2023 and it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset. Samsung, on the other hand, is using the much newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Both phones do come with 12GB of RAM and go up to 512GB of storage. The Flip 6 does use the faster UFS 4.0 storage, while the Vivo X Flip uses a slightly slower UFS 3.1 storage system. Will this be noticeable? On paper, yes. In day-to-day usage, unless you’re writing and accessing very large files, we don’t think this will make a particularly huge difference.

Cameras

The cameras are interesting. Samsung’s foldables have never really been known to have exceptional camera quality. They did upgrade the Flip 6’s main camera to a 50MP shooter. Vivo is using a 50MP main as well, which is accompanied by a 12MP secondary ultrawide, similar to Samsung.

The main difference is that Vivo has worked with Zeiss to include the use of the company’s Zeiss T* lens coating. It sounds good on paper, but there are other factors to consider like software processing, so it will be interesting to see if Samsung’s camera software can compensate for its hardware.

On the selfie front, Vivo is using a 32MP front-facing camera, while Samsung has opted for a paltry 10MP. The upside with foldables is that the outer display can be used as a viewfinder, so if you think 10MP won’t cut it, you could always use the new 50MP camera as an alternative.

Battery

When it comes to battery life, the Vivo X Flip packs a 4,400mAh battery with 44W wired charging. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip uses a 4,000mAh battery with 25W wired charging. It also supports 15W wireless charging too, along with 4.5W of reverse wireless charging. It’s actually kind of weird the Vivo X Flip does not support wireless charging in this day and age, so it’s something you’ll have to take into consideration.

Pricing & availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is available for purchase for $1,099. This is a slightly higher price tag compared to its predecessor. The Vivo X Flip launched at CNY8,999 which is roughly $1,200 after conversion, making it more expensive. You could argue that the use of a larger display, “better” cameras, and a larger battery could justify the price. However, the handset isn’t officially available in the US, so if you are one of our US readers and you really want the phone, you’ll have to find a gray market import.
