Samsung and OnePlus cater to different audiences with their respective flagships. The former is known for releasing smartphones that deliver the best of everything while being a lot more expensive. OnePlus flagships are known to provide high-end features but at a significantly cheaper price.
Their respective latest offerings are the Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12R. In this comparison, we will see which smartphone makes a better pick for you.
Design and Display
The OnePlus 12R design is something you can spot easily. It has a bigger circular camera module housing three camera sensors and an LED flash. It does not have Hasselblad branding as this phone does not come with the Hasselblad tune-up. You get a glossy back finish with the Cool Blue color and a matte back finish with the Iron Gray color. Its Alert Slider is on the left side and you get a power button and volume rockers on the right side.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a design we have seen on Samsung flagships in the last few editions. It has a frosted glass back and a vertically-aligned rear camera setup. Each of the four cameras is protruding separately. The major difference this year is the grade 2 titanium frame.
The OnePlus 12R offers a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 1264 x 2780 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It offers HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and 4,500 nits peak brightness. With the Galaxy S24 Ultra, you will get a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ LTPO AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate. It has Corning Gorilla Glass Armor protection and 2,600 nits peak brightness.
Performance
The OnePlus 12R comes with last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. It is a 4nm flagship chipset paired with Adreno 740 GPU. The configuration options are available for up to 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is loaded with the newest 3nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It has an Adreno 750 GPU along with 12GB RAM across all configuration variants. It offers up to 1TB UFS 4.0 storage.
Both smartphones deliver flagship-level performance but if you want the latest processor and faster data read and write speeds, Samsung is the undisputed winner.
Cameras
The OnePlus 12R has a triple rear cameras headlined by a 50MP wide sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The other two cameras are an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP macro sensor with f/2.4 aperture. It offers PDAF and OIS support only with the primary sensor.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a quad-camera setup featuring a 200MP wide-angle sensor with f/1.7 aperture, a 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and f/2.4 aperture, a 50MP periscope telephoto sensor with 5x optical zoom and f/3.4 aperture, and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture. You get phase detection autofocus (PDAF) with all four sensors but only the first three cameras offer OIS support.
Samsung is once the undisputed winner here. It not only offers versatile options for different photography needs but also offers superior camera performance across all sensors. With the OnePlus, only the primary sensor is worth talking about.
Software
The OnePlus 12R boots Android 14 layered with OxygenOS 14 out of the box. It has a minimal software UI packed with features that will improve your user experience. You also get a promise of three years of OS updates and four years of security patches.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra runs One UI 6.1 based on Android 14. The popular custom Android skin has gotten significantly better than early years. Samsung has even integrated a suite of AI features officially referred to as Galaxy AI. The smartphone comes with seven years of OS upgrades and security patch promise.
Battery
The OnePlus 12R has a 5,500mAh battery with 100W wired fast charging. It is claimed to charge the smartphone from zero to 100% within 26 minutes. However, it is limited to 80W wired fast charging in the United States.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is packed with a 5,000mAh battery. It supports 45W wired fast charging (65% charge in 30 minutes), 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
Verdict
If you are on a tight budget or don’t want to spend a lot, the OnePlus 12R is a smartphone that will not disappoint you. It has its shortcomings in a few areas but for the asking price, it becomes an ideal choice as it delivers optimal value for money.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a no-brainer for buyers with no budget constraints. It used to have issues with software updates in the past but with the latest release, Samsung has improved in that aspect too.
