Disney recently announced that it has moved forward with the purchase of a $1,5 billion stake in Epic Games, in addition to a massive collaboration with the latter towards the creation of an open and expansive “social universe” that will be integrated with Fortnite, allowing players to blast around with their buddies alongside characters and IP from Disney’s many other media properties.
The deal was made public at Disney’s Q1 FY24 Earnings Call – according to the company, this new venture will let players “create their own stories and experiences, express their fandom in a distinctly Disney way, and share content with each other in ways that they love.” Robert A. Iger, Disney CEO states:
“Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe… This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways.”
This reveal comes not too long after the creation of a new sports streaming platform via an agreement signed between the Walt Disney Corporation, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corporation that will broadcast major sports events and content from several channels including ESPN, ABC, Fox, TNT and TBS, as well as select sports rights from all three companies on a “non-exclusive basis”.
