Samsung recently announced its newest range of SSDs under the “990 PRO” brand, which consists of PCIe 4.0 SSDs powered by Samsung’s eighth-generation V-NAND (V8) technology, as well as an enhanced proprietary controller.
According to Samsung, the 990 PRO series is built for massive data volumes, such as graphics-intensive projects and video content, data analytics and resource-hungry games, which can accommodate a wide range of desktop PCs, laptops, game consoles and more. The company adds that the 4TB 990 PRO enables near-max performance in a PCIe 4.0 interface, with sequential read speeds of up to 7,450 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and write speeds of up to 6,900MB/s.
In terms of design, the 4TB 990 PRO was developed with a single-sided M.2 form factor, which gives it an overall slimmer profile versus other double-sided M.2 SSDs. Samsung claims that this change in design works towards reducing the risk of damaging other internal components on your computer, especially during installation.
As for availability, the 990 PRO and 990 PRO with 4TB capacity + Heatsink will be available starting in October 2023. Meanwhile, the 990 PRO series’ 1TB and 2TB models are currently available for purchase.
