The majority of flagship Android phones launching in 2023 are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, an upgrade over its predecessor from 2022, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
This means that later this year, Qualcomm is expected to announce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which will most likely be used in 2024’s flagship phones. It might be too early to tell what to expect, but tipster Ice Universe has shared some potential specs of the chipset on their Twitter account.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Gen3: CPU: 1+5+2 frequency is unknown, GPU: Adreno 750 performance has been greatly improved. L3 cache: 10MB
This generation will maintain the overall energy efficiency of 8Gen2 and will be a Excellent SoC— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) May 16, 2023
According to the tweet, it seems that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will continue using an octa-core setup with a 1+5+2 configuration in terms of its cores. The GPU in the chipset will also be upgraded to the Adreno 750, where Ice Universe claims that its performance has “greatly improved”.
The tipster also claims that the chipset will feature 10MB of L3 cache, and that the overall energy efficiency of the chipset will carry forward from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Qualcomm hasn’t officially announced the chipset yet, but we expect that it will be unveiled towards the end of the year during the company’s Snapdragon Summit.
It is also unclear whether or not Qualcomm might launch a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 chipset as an in-between ahead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s launch, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
