Pretty much all headphones offer at least stereo sound, meaning that sound comes from the left and right side of the earcups. But in recent years, especially with the introduction of Apple’s AirPods, we’re starting to see spatial audio become more popular.
The good news for Android users is that it looks like spatial audio support is finally being rolled out to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 alongside the January 2023 security update. For those who have been following the development of the feature, you might have known that Google introduced it in the QPR1 beta for Android 13 last September, but then later disabled it.
Now it looks like it is ready for primetime as owners of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 should be able to make use of it if they use a compatible headset, like the Pixel Buds, for example.
For those who are unfamiliar about spatial audio, basically it’s like surround sound but taken to the next level. This is because unlike surround sound which relies on carefully positioned drivers, spatial audio uses your head movements to alter the sound, kind of like how if you were at a live performance and you turned your ear to face the stage, meaning that less sound is coming into your other ear.
It’s an interesting and unique feature that’s designed to help make the audio experience feel more immersive, so if you’ve been eagerly anticipating this feature, you should be able to expect it on your Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 phone soon enough.
