Qualcomm’s recent unveiling of its new and powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform during its Snapdragon Summit 2022 in Hawaii was no doubt one of the biggest tech events this year, and the company wasted no time in showcasing the newest features that came with the chipset.
With that said, the 8 Gen 2 comes with Qualcomm’s most advanced Bluetooth audio platforms in the form of the Qualcomm S5 Gen 2 Sound Platform and Qualcomm S3 Gen 2 Sound Platform, which both feature support for Snapdragon Sound technology. The new audio platforms come with spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking, improved lossless music streaming, and 48ms latency between phone and earbud for lag-free gaming. As per James Chapman, Vice President and General Manager for Voice, Music & Wearables:
“The next-generation Qualcomm S5 and S3 platforms have been designed to deliver the rich features that consumers want most, while also delivering ultra-low power performance. We were first to deliver Lossless audio over Bluetooth and since then, we’ve continued to innovate. We know from our 2022 State of Sound consumer research that more than half of consumers say they will be seeking out support for spatial audio on their next set of wireless earbuds. I’m excited to say we are bringing support for spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking to Snapdragon Sound technologies, lossless audio for the new Bluetooth LE Audio specification, and even lower latency on our latest platforms.”
The platforms are also compatible with third generation Qualcomm Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation, which improves listening experience by adapting to both in-ear fit and the user’s external environment. Of course, the ANC feature also comes with Adaptive Transparency mode, as well as automatic speech detection. This will also be handy for audio device developers as ANC technology helps solve commonly faced issues such as wind noise, howling and adverse events.
The Qualcomm S5 and S3 Gen 2 Sound Platforms will be featured in commercial products by the second half of 2023.
