When the Nothing Phone (1) was officially announced, we were a bit skeptical about its ability to succeed. After all, apart from the unique back design of the phone, it didn’t seem like there was a lot to it especially for a phone in that range, but upon review, we were pleasantly surprised at what it had to offer.
So much so that it didn’t really come as a surprise to learn that over in India, the Nothing Phone (1) is something of a success. Speaking to GSMArena, Vice President & General Manager of Nothing India Manu Sharma revealed that the handset had managed to sell over 100,000 units of the phone to date.
Sharma also notes that the phone is also the best-selling smartphone on Flipkart in the INR 30,000+ price range, and that over 10 million users had signed up to be notified about the phone’s launch (although we guess not all those translated into actual sales).
It should be pointed out that while 100,000 units is paltry compared to what other companies like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi are moving, it is very impressive for a single market and also for a relatively new brand that relied on an invite system in order to purchase the handset.
We also suppose having OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei helming the new company probably helped it in terms of recognition. It will be interesting to see how well future models will do, especially if the company expands to more markets, but for now in such a competitive environment, it looks like they’re holding up pretty well.
