Your Snapchat messages are private, but not from the police!

11

Snapchat has stricken smartphone users across the globe, with the promise of truly private conversations. The trick is that all messages disappear after being read by the recipient, making it the perfect app for any secret conversation. Unless the police happen to have a warrant and they need to see your messages!

Snapchat has recently uncovered that they have, in fact, given the police access to messages. There is a bit of a trick, though. Snapchat deletes all messages from its servers right after the recipient reads them. Read messages are gone forever. This means the police can only get access to unread messages.

Of course, they would need a warrant, and this is not something the police often ask for. Snapchat mentions that they have handed information over to the authorities only a dozen times. They also don’t fail to emphasize that over 350 million Snapchat messages are sent a day. Who knows, you might have a better chance winning the lottery than getting your snaps surveilled by the police.

Be careful with those selfies, guys!

  1. And of course they turn all unopened messages over to the NSA, where they might end up in the hands of the DEA or FBI like in other such programs.

    1. I thought the NSA just kept a mirror of all the unopened messages and just doesn’t sync the deletions . . .

We could just cut the middle man out here, ditch Snapchat, and all get an account with the NSA. Boy, could they even make a super Facebook. They know all your friends, even the ones you’ve forgotten.

  2. I’m not gonna lie. I’ve taken some screenshots of Snapchat messages.

    1. I don’t get what you’re trying to say. The message was meant for you. You can copy and paste the messages. LoL!!

      1. It was a bad joke.

          Oh… I see…

          Well then…

  3. Oh my…

Kik is sounding better right now. Kik only stores like 100 messages on your phone and there is NO known way to get messages back.

I’m not too sure on their behind the scenes rules though. I’m assuming it’s something similar since the party would have to read the message 1st.

  4. Anything electronic can be handed over to the authorities with a court ordered subpoena. This is nothing new.

  5. What would the police need with snapchat? The people I know who use it send super stupid stuff.

  6. or just download snapcapture

  7. Just today they ran a story on the local radio in Toronto that pedophile fighting unit discovered that most of the explicit teenage pics from networks like that land on pedophiles’ PCs to enjoy. And usually the ones local to the pic sender. Teach your children first, then blame the government!
