Earlier this week, OnePlus announced that it was beginning to roll out Android 12 for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. This is the first major software release to occur following the merger of the OnePlus and OPPO teams, and there’s a lot riding on this for OnePlus fans. However, it seems that not everything has been working according to plan.
There are quite a few issues that seem to be plaguing devices following the update, and in one case, someone’s phone downgraded their processor description from the Snapdragon 888 to an older chipset. This was only found in the settings panel, but you can understand why this sort of hiccup shouldn’t occur.
As is the case with most frustrating bugs, OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro owners went to work trying to figure out what was causing all of the issues. And it seems that there is a fix, but it’s not pretty, nor is it fun. Instead, you’ll need to completely wipe your phone. Plus, during the setup process, you should not restore the OS settings.

It would appear that there is something wonky going on when it comes to migrating from OxygenOS 11 to ColorOS 12. We aren’t sure what the problem actually is, but after performing the clean wipe, users have reported much better performance. Adam Conway of XDA went so far as to detail his adventures with the update, stating that doing so made his phone “much more usable”.
This is an extremely frustrating situation, as nobody should have to completely wipe their phones after an update like this. Instead, it should be a last-ditch effort if nothing else works. But it’s clear that something is going on with the underlying code that simply “doesn’t like” what OxygenOS 11 includes when updating to ColorOS 12. Hopefully OnePlus issues an official fix in the coming weeks, but if you can’t wait, just wipe your phone and start fresh.
