Several companies have already hopped on board the foldable phone bandwagon save for OnePlus who still seems to be holding out on creating phones with a single display, but that could change soon.
According to a patent discovered by LetsGoDigital, it appears that OnePlus has filed a patent for a smartphone with a tri-fold display. This means that instead of the more typical foldable phone like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, this will use triple displays to expand the phone’s display to be even larger.
Right now phones like the Galaxy Z Fold can unfold and double up as a mini tablet of sorts, but using a triple display, we could be looking at a much larger tablet. It could also be a great way for OnePlus to segue into the tablet market, something that the company has yet to do. Based on the patent, it describes how the phone will use a hinge style with a sliding key and a magnet.
What’s also interesting is that the hinge is a double-hinge system, meaning that it can fold in more than one direction. So instead of being able to just fold into itself, it can fold at various angles to help create different shapes and setups.
That being said, as this is a patent there’s no telling if OnePlus will actually make this a reality, so don’t get your hopes up just yet, but it will be interesting to see if the company will dip its toes into the foldable market.
